Solar panels are highly valuable for residences in Goa due to abundant sunlight. They enable significant savings on electricity expenses, particularly beneficial during power outages. The Goa Energy Development Agency, in partnership with the state’s Department of New and Renewable Energy and Electricity, developed the portal. The rooftop solar subsidy cost will be divided between the state and central governments, granting applicants a 50% discount on their eligible expenses.

Solar Panels: At the core of any solar system are solar panels, comprised of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity. These panels come in various types, including DCR, monocrystalline, and bifacial variants. Bifacial solar panels are particularly popular for residential use.

Solar Inverter: Solar panels produce direct current (DC) electricity, while most household appliances operate on alternating current (AC). Therefore, a solar inverter is necessary to convert DC to AC. On-grid solar inverters, available in sizes ranging from 3KW to 10 KW, are integral components of the system.

Solar Batteries (optional): Some solar power setups incorporate batteries to store surplus electricity for use during periods of low sunlight, such as cloudy days or nighttime. This feature is especially beneficial in areas with unreliable grid power, ensuring continuous electricity availability.

Mounting Structure: Solar panels require secure mounting on rooftops or the ground. The mounting structure not only anchors the panels but also positions them optimally to capture maximum sunlight.

Charge Controller (if utilizing batteries): When batteries are part of the system, a charge controller regulates the flow of electricity to and from the batteries, safeguarding against overcharging and extending battery lifespan.

Wiring: Proper wiring is essential for safely and efficiently connecting all system components. These wires transport electricity from the solar panels to the inverter, batteries (if applicable), and ultimately to your home or the grid.

Net metering is important for solar subsidies in Goa because it helps more people use clean energy. With net metering, solar panel owners can sell extra electricity back to the DISCOM and earn money. This encourages more people to choose solar power, which is good for the economy.

To apply for a net meter in Goa, follow these simple steps:

  1. Click on Goa Solar Rooftop Portal website.

2. For those in the Residential category seeking a subsidy, please opt for ‘Subsidy Based RTS Installation.’ For applicants in other categories, please select ‘Non-Subsidy Based RTS Installation.’

3. Now, The applicant have to fill the following details:

    • Name
    • Email
    • Mobile Number
    • Consumer Category
    • Pincode
    • Captcha

    4. After submitting the ‘Consumer Interest Form,’ the applicant will need to choose three installers for the rooftop solar installation.

    5. Then click on submit.

    On-Grid Solar System: Opting for an on-grid solar system can potentially slash your electricity bill by up to 80%. Also referred to as a grid-tied solar system, this setup is interconnected with the electricity grid, enabling substantial savings on utility bills. Moreover, surplus electricity generated can be sold back to the DISCOM, providing an additional source of income.

    Off-Grid Solar System: If you reside in a remote location or frequently encounter power outages, an off-grid solar system could be the ideal solution. This system includes batteries to store excess energy for use when sunlight is unavailable.

    Hybrid Solar System: Combining features of both on-grid and off-grid systems, a hybrid solar system integrates a grid-connected setup with battery backup. This configuration offers the advantage of storing surplus power for emergencies while also allowing for selling excess electricity to the grid for financial gain.

    According to solar experts, the hybrid solar system emerges as the optimal choice, offering reduced electricity bills and backup power during emergencies. This versatility makes it a preferred option for residential installations.

    Both central and state government offer subsidies schemes to people for installation the rooftops solar system.

    The central government subsidy scheme, referred to as DBT (Direct Bank Transfer), involves the direct transfer of the subsidy amount into the customer’s bank account within 30 days of the solar system’s commissioning. You can access the central government subsidy by applying through the National Portal for Solar.

    Currently, MNRE offers a 40% subsidy to residential consumers installing rooftop solar power plants ranging from 1 kW to 3 kW, with an additional 10% subsidy provided by the state government. For rooftop solar plants with capacities between 4 kW and 10 kW, MNRE provides a 20% subsidy, complemented by an extra 30% subsidy from Goa. The Union ministry is transitioning to a fixed subsidy model, which GEDA will also implement.

    Both the central and state governments provide solar subsidies. In general category states, the central government contributes 30% of the total subsidy amount. However, in special states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, J&K, and Lakshadweep, the central government covers 70% of the subsidy amount.     To qualify for the subsidy, certain guidelines must be followed. You should reach out to your electricity provider or DISCOM and apply online with the required documentation. A representative will conduct a site visit for evaluation and grant approval. Subsequently, an inspection by the electricity provider will take place, after which customers can access the subsidy amount.
